Das International Performance Art Archive realisiert für Köln eine neue Kultur-Reihe: öffnet die tür das fenster. An 5 Sonntagsterminen kommen 10 großartige Performance-Künstler*innen aus unterschiedlichen Kontinenten in den Kulturbunker Köln-Mülheim: Performances auf internationalem Spitzenniveau. Anschließend reisen die jeweiligen Paarungen weiter in die Kunsthalle Gießen.

RIAN CATLING – britischer Performance Künstler, Schriftsteller und Professor für Fine Art in Oxford – kämpfte trotz schwerer Krankheit bis zuletzt, Teil der Performance-Reihe open the door a window sein zu können. Noch im September verabredeten wir, er könne jederzeit nach Köln kommen und druckten eine neue Einladung: BRIAN CATLING. carte blanche. Am 26. September 2022 erlag er seiner Krebserkrankung. Wir sind tief betrübt und voller Anteilnahme. Ohne diesen wunderbaren Künstler wollen wir unsere Performance-Reihe nicht abschließen.
Und auch nicht ohne JAMES KING: Seit 45 Jahren als Performance-Künstler unterwegs und 30 Jahre Dozent im Bereich Community Drama, erklimmt er die Brücken, Fahrradständer oder Mülltonnen in Derry, er bringt die Performance Art weltweit auf die Straße und in die Stadt. In seinen Performances hinterfragt KING das in der Welt-Sein, oftmals nicht allein: Sein Wissen um intuitive Spontaneität ist eine offene Einladung an Künstlerkolleg*innen wie Vorbeigehende, sich einzubringen, den öffentlichen Raum zu nutzen und fordern. Von sprachlicher Poesie, spielerischem Straßentheater bis hin zu künstlerischem Protest reicht die Praxis des Mitbegründers der nordirischen Performance Art.

We are deeply saddened and full of condolence. We do not want to close our performance series without this wonderful artist.
Nor without JAMES KING: on the road for 45 years as a performance artist and lecturer in the field of community drama, he scales the bridges, bicycle racks or rubbish bins in Derry, he brings performance art onto the streets and into the city worldwide. In his performances, KING questions being in the world, often not alone: his knowledge of intuitive spontaneity is an open invitation to fellow artists and passers-by alike to get involved, to use and challenge public space. The practice of the pioneer of Northern Irish performance art ranges from linguistic poetry and playful street theatre to artistic protest.
Two great artists, two great people and performance art workers. We are deeply honoured, thankful and greatly in anticipation.
